JPG to JPEG: what changes in the file

This tool takes a JPG image, processes it with the sharp library (libvips) on our servers and returns a JPEG image.

JPG and JPEG are the same JPEG format — only the file extension differs. If you only need the other extension, renaming the file is enough; this tool re-encodes the image at quality 90, which adds one more round of compression.

Measured with a sample file

On September 25, 2026 we ran the tool on our production server with a sample file: a 1920×1080 JPG image, 182 KB.

Result: 182 KB → 100 KB, processed in 0.6 s. Output: a 1920×1080 JPEG image.

Real sizes depend on the image content (detailed photos are heavier than flat graphics); the figures only show the order of change.

Before you convert

Up to 30 MB and 40 million pixels (about 8000×5000) per image.
The file is sent to our server for conversion and deleted as soon as processing ends, including when it fails.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any difference between JPG and JPEG?

No. They are the same JPEG format with a different extension. Renaming the file is enough if the site you upload to only checks the extension.

How does the file size change from JPG to JPEG?
