How to Convert JPG to GIF Online
JPG to GIF: what changes in the file
This tool takes a JPG image, processes it with the sharp library (libvips) on our servers and returns a GIF image.
JPG is lossy while GIF stores data exactly. The GIF file will be larger but not better: detail discarded by JPG cannot be restored.
How JPG and GIF differ
| Property | JPG | GIF |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | JPEG | Graphics Interchange Format |
| Introduced | Joint Photographic Experts Group, 1992 | CompuServe, 1987 |
| Compression | lossy | lossless |
| Strengths | small photos accepted everywhere | simple animation that plays everywhere |
| Limitations | no transparency; each re-save loses a little quality | only 256 colours: photos get banding; animated GIFs are very large |
Measured with a sample file
On September 25, 2026 we ran the tool on our production server with a sample file: a 1920×1080 JPG image, 182 KB.
Result: 182 KB → 140 KB, processed in 1.5 s. Output: a 1920×1080 GIF image.
Real sizes depend on the image content (detailed photos are heavier than flat graphics); the figures only show the order of change.
Before you convert
- GIF has only 256 colours, so photos and smooth gradients show banding.
- Up to 30 MB and 40 million pixels (about 8000×5000) per image.
- The file is sent to our server for conversion and deleted as soon as processing ends, including when it fails.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to GIF improve quality?
No. GIF only stores exactly what is left in the JPG; what was lost when the JPG was compressed does not come back. The file just gets larger.
Why does the GIF show colour banding?
GIF has only 256 colours. Photos and smooth gradients have to be reduced to that palette, which causes bands.
How does the file size change from JPG to GIF?
With our sample file: 182 KB → 140 KB. Your file may differ depending on its content.
