How to Convert WebP to PNG Online
WEBP to PNG: what changes in the file
This tool takes a WEBP image, processes it with the sharp library (libvips) on our servers and returns a PNG image.
WEBP is lossy while PNG stores data exactly. The PNG file will be larger but not better: detail discarded by WEBP cannot be restored.
How WEBP and PNG differ
| Property | WEBP | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | WebP | Portable Network Graphics |
| Introduced | Google, 2010 | W3C, 1996 |
| Compression | lossy | lossless |
| Strengths | usually 25–35% smaller than JPEG at similar quality; supports transparency and animation | lossless with full transparency; best for screenshots, logos, text and UI graphics |
| Limitations | some older editors, print shops and upload forms do not accept it | photos become much larger than JPEG |
Measured with a sample file
On September 25, 2026 we ran the tool on our production server with a sample file: a 1920×1080 WEBP image, 68 KB.
Result: 68 KB → 384 KB, processed in 0.5 s. Output: a 1920×1080 PNG image.
Real sizes depend on the image content (detailed photos are heavier than flat graphics); the figures only show the order of change.
Before you convert
- Up to 30 MB and 40 million pixels (about 8000×5000) per image.
- The file is sent to our server for conversion and deleted as soon as processing ends, including when it fails.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting WEBP to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG only stores exactly what is left in the WEBP; what was lost when the WEBP was compressed does not come back. The file just gets larger.
How does the file size change from WEBP to PNG?
With our sample file: 68 KB → 384 KB. Your file may differ depending on its content.
