How to Convert PNG to JPG Online
PNG to JPG: what changes in the file
This tool takes a PNG image, processes it with the sharp library (libvips) on our servers and returns a JPG image.
PNG keeps data intact while JPG is lossy. The file gets much smaller, but the step is one-way — keep your original PNG.
How PNG and JPG differ
| Property | PNG | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Portable Network Graphics | JPEG |
| Introduced | W3C, 1996 | Joint Photographic Experts Group, 1992 |
| Compression | lossless | lossy |
| Strengths | lossless with full transparency; best for screenshots, logos, text and UI graphics | small photos accepted everywhere |
| Limitations | photos become much larger than JPEG | no transparency; each re-save loses a little quality |
Measured with a sample file
On September 25, 2026 we ran the tool on our production server with a sample file: a 1920×1080 PNG image, 211 KB.
Result: 211 KB → 102 KB, processed in 0.2 s. Output: a 1920×1080 JPEG image.
Real sizes depend on the image content (detailed photos are heavier than flat graphics); the figures only show the order of change.
Before you convert
- JPG has no transparency: transparent areas of the PNG image are flattened onto a solid background.
- Up to 30 MB and 40 million pixels (about 8000×5000) per image.
- The file is sent to our server for conversion and deleted as soon as processing ends, including when it fails.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert the JPG back to PNG to recover quality?
No. Data discarded by JPG compression is gone. Keep the original PNG if you may need full quality later.
Is the transparent background kept?
No. JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas are flattened. Choose PNG or WebP if you need transparency.
How does the file size change from PNG to JPG?
With our sample file: 211 KB → 102 KB. Your file may differ depending on its content.
