PDF to TXT: what changes in the file
This tool takes a PDF file, converts it with LibreOffice running on our servers and returns a TXT file.
How PDF and TXT differ
| Property | TXT | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Portable Document Format | Plain text |
| Introduced | Adobe, 1993 (ISO 32000 since 2008) | — |
| Data type | laid-out document | plain text |
| Strengths | looks the same on every device; standard for sharing and printing | opens anywhere; smallest possible file |
| Limitations | hard to edit; a scanned PDF contains images of text, not text | no formatting, images or tables |
Measured with a sample file
On September 25, 2026 we ran the tool on our production server with a sample file: a 2-page PDF with real text (not a scan), 2 KB.
Result: 2 KB → 1 KB, processed in 0.1 s. Output: a valid TXT file (file signature checked).
Real sizes depend on document length, embedded images and fonts; the figures only show the order of change.
Before you convert
- The PDF is opened with the LibreOffice PDF importer: the layout is rebuilt as positioned text boxes. There is no text recognition (OCR) — a scanned PDF will not become editable text.
- TXT holds text only: all formatting, images and tables are removed.
- Up to 100 MB per file; a conversion that runs longer than 2 minutes is cancelled.
- The file is sent to our server for conversion and deleted as soon as processing ends, including when it fails.
