How to Convert OGV to MP4 Online

OGV to MP4 Converter

This tool accepts OGV files, carrying the Theora codec with Vorbis — an open pairing that is now old. MP4 is the most widely supported container in use today: nearly every phone, browser, television and social platform reads it, and it carries H.264 with AAC — the codec pair that hardware decoders on almost every device recognise. These two containers hold two different families of codecs, so the streams cannot be copied. All the video and audio has to be decoded and then encoded again with the codec of the target format — and that step adds a layer of loss.

How to convert OGV to MP4

  1. Select or drag OGV files into the upload area.
  2. Confirm that the requested output format is MP4.
  3. Start the conversion and review the status of each file.
  4. Download each result once processing has finished.

Convert several files in one batch

The interface currently accepts up to 10 files per batch. Files are processed one after another; duplicates, mislabeled files and damaged files may be skipped or reported as errors.

File size after conversion

The size is decided by the output settings and not by the size of the source. The result can come out smaller or larger than the source while still being lower in quality. The MP4 container itself adds only a very small amount, so the size is decided almost entirely by the streams inside it.

Check the result

Watch a fast-moving passage and a dark passage — compression marks show up there first — then check that sound stays in step with picture right to the end. A Theora source has usually been compressed fairly hard already. The ceiling on the quality of the result is set by the source itself, so choosing higher output settings adds no detail.

Limits worth knowing

This tool changes the file format. It does not guarantee that every piece of metadata, every format-specific property or every embedded object survives the conversion. Keep the source file and test the result in the application where you plan to use it.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose MP4

Because it opens in more places than any other format here. If you do not yet know where the file will be used, MP4 is the least risky choice.

What can MP4 not hold

It cannot hold VP9, Vorbis or Theora. A source carrying one of those has to be re-encoded.

Is converting from OGV to a newer format an improvement

In how widely the file opens, yes. In picture quality, no: the detail Theora discarded does not come back.

Why does this conversion take so long

Because every frame has to be decoded and encoded again. The time is proportional to the length of the footage, not to the size of the file.

Is there a way to convert without losing quality

Not between these two families of codecs. Avoiding loss means choosing a target format that belongs to the same codec family as the source.

Is my original file replaced?

No. The file on your device is left untouched.
