This tool accepts MP4 files, the most widely supported container, normally carrying H.264 with AAC. WebM is the open container made for the web, carrying VP8 or VP9 with Opus or Vorbis. At comparable quality it gives a clearly smaller file than H.264, and in exchange older software and some decoding chips cannot read it. These two containers hold two different families of codecs, so the streams cannot be copied. All the video and audio has to be decoded and then encoded again with the codec of the target format — and that step adds a layer of loss.

File size after conversion

The size is decided by the output settings and not by the size of the source. The result can come out smaller or larger than the source while still being lower in quality. At quality regarded as equivalent, WebM usually comes out clearly smaller than an H.264 source. This is the main reason to choose the format.

Check the result

Watch a fast-moving passage and a dark passage — compression marks show up there first — then check that sound stays in step with picture right to the end. If the source uses H.265 or AV1 instead of H.264, the target container may not be able to hold that codec and re-encoding happens anyway, even though the two containers belong to the same family.

Limits worth knowing

This tool changes the file format. It does not guarantee that every piece of metadata, every format-specific property or every embedded object survives the conversion. Keep the source file and test the result in the application where you plan to use it.

Where does WebM open

In current browsers. Many editing programs, older players and the preview in some operating systems do not open it.

Is WebM really smaller

At the same quality it usually is. But this is compression with loss, so smaller does not mean better than the source.

How do I find out which codec is inside

Look at the file information in your player. The file extension tells you the container, not the codec inside it.

Why does this conversion take so long

Because every frame has to be decoded and encoded again. The time is proportional to the length of the footage, not to the size of the file.

Is there a way to convert without losing quality

Not between these two families of codecs. Avoiding loss means choosing a target format that belongs to the same codec family as the source.
