How to Convert MP3 to FLAC Online
MP3 to FLAC: what changes in the file
This tool takes a MP3 file, processes it with FFmpeg on DownloadVideo.vn servers and returns a FLAC file.
MP3 is lossy while FLAC stores data exactly. The FLAC file will be larger but not better: detail discarded by MP3 cannot be restored.
How MP3 and FLAC differ
| Property | MP3 | FLAC |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | MPEG-1 Audio Layer III | Free Lossless Audio Codec |
| Introduced | Fraunhofer / MPEG, 1993 | Xiph.Org Foundation, 2001 |
| Compression | lossy | lossless |
| Strengths | plays everywhere: phones, cars, speakers, browsers; about 1 MB per minute at 128 kbps | lossless: identical to the source after decoding; typically 50–70% of the size of WAV |
| Limitations | lossy: removed detail cannot be recovered; less efficient than AAC or Opus at the same bitrate | older iPhones/iTunes and some car stereos do not play it |
Measured with a sample file
On September 25, 2026 we ran the tool on our production server with a sample file: 10 seconds of 44.1 kHz stereo audio (MP3 192 kbps), 236 KB.
Result: 236 KB → 1,006 KB, processed in 1.3 s. Output: FLAC audio at 44.1 kHz stereo.
Real sizes depend on your content (how complex the picture and sound are, and the length); the figures only show the order of change.
Before you convert
- The tool always re-encodes the picture and sound, even when the source codec would already fit the target format.
- Up to 500 MB per file; a conversion that runs longer than 10 minutes is cancelled.
- The file is sent to our server for conversion and deleted as soon as processing ends, including when it fails.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting MP3 to FLAC improve quality?
No. FLAC only stores exactly what is left in the MP3; what was lost when the MP3 was compressed does not come back. The file just gets larger.
How does the file size change from MP3 to FLAC?
With our sample file: 236 KB → 1,006 KB. Your file may differ depending on its content.
